Core Curriculum Update
Meg Driscoll
Issue date: 10/1/08 Section: Op Ed
The faculty of the School of Arts, with the on-going work of the Committee to Revise the Core, voted to make several changes to the Core Curriculum.
Some of the changes are easy to implement after the ballot vote, such as eliminating the LLRN designation from the class names. According to Dr. Daniel Collins, Director of the Core Curriculum, each course will instead be given departmental designations. But, other changes require much more discussion and will continue to be revised throughout the year.
Among the more in-depth changes is the current 3-credit global/non-western distribution requirement. The faculty will soon decide whether this will be a six or nine credit requirement.
In addition, college writing will be replaced with either one or two first-year writing intensive seminars. This decision will also be the subject of much discussion this year.
In the ballot vote, the faculty will maintain the current teaching of the Medieval period in core curriculum classes.
Stay tuned for more information regarding the impending changes to the Core.
