Manhattan College gave its last farewell to the beloved Brother Timothy on a cold and rainy March 31, 2004.
Brother Timothy passed away on March 28, 2004 surrounded by his family and Brothers after a long battle with lymphoma. Born in a suburb of Syracuse on January 21, 1936, Paul Jerome Wentworth entered the Brother's novitiate on September 7, 1955 and from then on was known as Brother Anthony Timothy.
In early 2002, he joined the Manhattan College community and quickly became involved in the counseling center where his abilities to heal a wounded psyche or set straight those led astray were put to good use.
In his brief stay at Manhattan College, he became known as the jovial counselor with a ready smile for all and a quirky sense of humor that put anyone at ease. Whether with a joke or that ever-present smile, or his always-ready references to Finding Nemo, Brother Timothy had the gift of touching the hearts of those that wandered into his office, and brushing their worries aside. It was through his heart-warming and creative character that he brought to life and made more prevalent the Lasallian presence at Manhattan College.
As Brother Robert Berger said, "Whether we knew him as a teacher, administrator, novice director, Brother Visitor, spiritual director, counselor, family member, Christian Brother, friend, dog lover, Nemo lover, or, during his younger days, as a referee in a sport he knew nothing about, we knew him as a man who thought wisely, served broadly, and loved deeply.
'His intelligence was keen; his smile sly. His dedication was total; his serve generous. His heart was gentle; his humor bizarre. Only Brother Timothy would die in such a way that that he would be buried on April Fool's Day," he said.
Brother Timothy was a special mentor and teacher to many. We will remember this Brother with a pang in our hearts and smiles on our faces.
