Briana Visone

Issue date: 9/22/04 Section: Arts & Entertainment
On September 24, 2004, The Forgotten will be released into theaters. This movie is a suspense film starring Julianne Moore and Dominick West. Joseph Ruben, who directed other suspense films such as Sleeping with the Enemy and The Good Son, directed The Forgotten.

Julianne Moore portrays Telly Paretta, a woman who lost her son in a plane accident. Six children were on a plane that crashed going to summer camp. The film begins 14 months after the crash. Telly still cannot stop mourning the death of her son. Everyone else has moved on, but Telly cannot. One day, Telly wakes up to find all of the pictures and videos of her son missing. Her psychologist (Gary Sinise) and husband (Anthony Edwards) both tell Telly that she never had a son but imagined it. However, Telly cannot accept this and attempts to prove that she is not mentally ill. She enlists the help of Ash (Dominick West) who lost his daughter in the plane crash. He, too, does not remember Telly's son or his own daughter, but over time, Telly gets him to remember Lauren, his daughter. Telly and Ash need to prove the children are alive. The rest of the movie presents the question as to whether Telly is insane and this is all in her head, it is a conspiracy of the government, or there is something else causing everyone to forget these children that died.

The Forgotten takes place in New York City. Constantly throughout the film, shots are taken of bridges and other areas of New York that make it impossible to forget where the film was shot. Much of the film was shot in DUMBO, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. The Forgotten could not have been filmed in a better city. New York is the place where people can blend in and not be known. As fast as a person walks by, one would forget him/her. For this fact, New York is almost a character in the film.

In a business where women have difficulties getting parts as they age, Julianne Moore has come out on top. It has been stated that Moore is the next Meryl Streep. In 2002, Moore was nominated for two Oscars for acting. Best supporting actress for The Hours and best actress for Far From Heaven. This is the ninth time in Academy history that this has happened.
