Manhattan Alumni Return as Resident Directors

Brian O’Connor

Issue date: 9/22/04 Section: Features
This fall, three familiar faces will assume new positions at Manhattan College. Alumni Frank J. Gizzo, Paul Wassenbergh, and Erin Carey return to the residence halls of Manhattan College as Resident Directors of Overlook and Horan Hall.

Kevin McCloskey, the Director of the Residence Life program at Manhattan College, stressed that the new directors embody both the strength to manage the buildings, and the accessible personality that assists in the creation of correspondence between themselves and Resident Assistants, a critical aspect of the position. According to McCloskey, the primary job of Resident Directors is to maintain the safety, discipline, and accessibility of administration towards the students and paraprofessionals within their building. McCloskey insists that since students are paying for their accommodations as well as classes, their living space must be up to par with the education received.

Frank Gizzo, a recognizable face at Manhattan College, graduated from the school in 2003 and became the Resident Director of Overlook Manor this year. As a former student, Gizzo understands not only the importance of providing suitable working environments, but also the necessity for positive social atmospheres within the residence halls. As the new Director at Overlook Manor, he plans to maintain an enjoyable and successful workspace for students housed in the building. Overlook Manor is roughly two blocks from the campus, and contains apartment-style dormitories with rooms containing three to six residents. Most apartments are equipped with kitchens and balconies. While this is the first attempt at apartment-living for many of the juniors and seniors at Overlook, Gizzo assures that he can create a constructive ambiance within the building.

While Overlook Manor welcomes a new Resident Director, the residents of Horan Hall will also see some new faculty within the building. Alumni Paul Wassenbergh and Erin Carey became dual Directors of Horan Hall earlier this semester after spending their undergraduate years as Resident Assistants and staff members within the Residence Life department on campus. Wassenbergh, a mechanical engineering major from the graduating class of 2004, assumed his new position as Resident Director after over two years of experience as a Resident Assistant. Wassenbergh views his new position as a supportive one to Resident Assistants and students, while readily admitting his given moniker of The Enforcer - suggesting that he does not shy away from the administrative and judicial aspects his job requires. Although reluctant on stressing the less popular aspects of the job, Wassenbergh admits that administrative action against students can take up much of his shift.
