Although the Jasper Dancers have been around for years, they have never been given the respect they deserve, until now. Last year, the Dancers won three awards at the ceremony for extra-curricular clubs at Manhattan College. They won an award for Best Club, and their Mr. And Miss. Manhattan College pageant won Best Event. Also, President Candice Calabro won as Best Leader.
The Dancers unique style of hip hop mixed with jazz and other forms of dance attract people during half -time at both the men's and women's basketball games.
" Last year was great," said Calabro, "The men's team did so well, it made our job a lot more fun. Plus we got a chance to dance at Madison Square Garden which was so cool!"
The upcoming Manhattan Madness event will be the Dancers first performance this year. There, they will be able to show off their new talent and their new uniforms.
According to Calabro, "The girls on the team are a lot more technical this year, so we can integrate more jazz and more technical moves into our routine to showcase these amazing dancers. It's really exciting!"
Since the Jasper Dancers are considered a club by the college, they have numerous fundraisers and events that allow the student body to become acquainted with them.
"We have Happy Hours, the Mr. and Miss. Manhattan College pageant, where students compete in talent and clothing, and of course last year our big fundraiser was the Jasper Dancer Calendar," stated Calabro.
The twelve-month calendar, which featured one Dancer per month and the schedules of both basketball teams on the last page, helped the students recognize the girls around campus.
Calabro laughed saying, "We also got warm-ups with our names on the back, so we would be walking around campus and we would hear 'Hey October!' It's fun and flattering to know that they bought the calendar."
Last year, the calendars helped the girls buy the warm-ups, but this year Calabro and her team have bigger plans.
