Educated or Inebriated? : College Drinking

This past Labor Day weekend, two students from Manhattan College were involved in incidents in which alcohol was a contributing force. One student was pulled off a train by a police officer, and the other was hit by a car. Both will remain anonymous. These two incidents have made the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption a reality only two weeks into the semester.

The first incident happened Sunday morning at around 1 A.M. on the number 1 train coming back to campus. The student got on the train around Canal Street, and happened to get into a car in which a Manhattan College faculty member was sitting. According to this faculty member, who will also remain anonymous, the student looked pretty drunk and young, and he seemed lost. When he sat down, he asked the faculty member (whom he didn't know had any relation to the college) multiple times if he was on a Bronx bound train that would stop at 252nd street. The faculty member confirmed it was Bronx bound, and corrected the student, telling him it stopped at 242nd street. At that point the faculty member asked the student if he attended Manhattan College, and he said he did. It is unknown if he really does attend the college or if he was just confused. At this point the student fell asleep, and the faculty member was planning on helping the student get back to his dorm safely. Around 181st street station, the student woke up saying he had to go to the bathroom. He attempted to wrestle open the conductor's booth. He was told that it wasn't a bathroom, and he went outside between the two train cars and put his head down to vomit. At that point a police officer from the other car saw him and took him off the train at the 215th street station. The fate of the student is unknown.

The second incident happened late Sunday night, around 11 P.M. A student went into Manhattan to meet up with a friend and have a couple of drinks. His friends, who also wish to remain anonymous, say that after having some drinks he was crossing 57th street and 8th Avenue. He stepped into the street and a car hit him. It appeared that the car was going no more than 30 miles per hour. When he was hit, he shot up onto the car, breaking the windshield. When he fell off the car, he tried to get up, but he couldn't stand, and his friends urged him to stay on the ground. Staying conscious the whole time, he was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. He was told he had a broken leg, and needed surgery to put a metal rod right above his ankle. He was released from the hospital late last week and has hopes of returning to school this semester.
