Issue date: 9/22/04 Section: News
Senior Michael Brady was recently awarded a three year fellowship by the Clark Foundation. The foundation seeks to support and prepare students for leadership positions in community-based, nonprofit organizations in New York City. As a fellow, Brady will receive $30,000 toward graduate school, as well as assistance in launching his career in the nonprofit field.

During his first year as a Clark Fellow, Brady will attend a leadership retreat and participate in workshops and seminars concerning graduate education and nonprofit employment. In his second and third years, he will attend graduate school and work 20 hours per week at a nonprofit organization. Brady's award includes a salary of $10,000 per year for two years. He will also receive an additional $10,000 in scholarship toward graduate school.

Brady, who has committed himself to a public service profession, applied for the fellowship early in his junior year. He filed a detailed application, two essays, and a number of references. The foundation reviewed all the submissions and narrowed the pool to a final group of nine people. Seven members of the Clark Foundation, including the director, a trustee, and the dean of admissions, interviewed each of the nine students. Out of the all the interviewees, Brady, along with two students from Barnard and NYU, were selected. Julie Grogan-Brown, another Manhattan student, also made it to the interview level of the process, but was not named a Fellow.

Brady, a triple major in English, urban affairs, and government, looks forward to studying public policy and urban planning. He is investigating New York University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and schools in Boston for graduate and doctoral school.

Brady's awards, however, have not been obtained effortlessly; he has constructed an expansive resume during his four years at Manhattan College. Brady has run retreats and food drives, lead trips to Honduras during winter break, tutored at local schools, and volunteered at local hospitals. He raised money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life program, and participated in First Book's nationwide effort to distribute new books to children from low-income families. Brady is also chair of the community action board in the Bronx. He has assisted Carl McCall with his campaign for governor, Mike Connors with his campaign for comptroller, and Steve Kaufman with his senate campaign. In addition, Brady spent the summer as a Branigan Fellow. He wrote a 100 page honors thesis entitled, Unspoken Masses- Gender and Class in the Mask of Anarchy.
