The Manhattan College men's tennis team was honored with the prestigious All-Academic title given by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association earlier this summer.
The tennis team was just one of 35 Division I schools to receive this award. They won their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship and advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament for the first time in program history this past spring. The Jaspers posted a 14-5 overall record, and perfect 7-0 slate in the MAAC.
The men's Tennis team was ranked fourth out of all athletic programs. Manhattan was honored behind Yale, College of Charleston and St. John's.
Seven of the team members honored for their academic success August 5, 2004 were seniors Pawel Wawrzyniak and Klim Fedosienko, juniors Erez Cohen and Alon Cohen, and freshmen Zoltan Bus, David Alvarado, and Diego Alvarado.
"I think that the awards we received from the ITA for our Grade Point Average Is a good reflection of our tennis team's determination and perseverance to succeed in all of our endeavors," said Erez Cohen.
In order to receive the ITA Scholar-Athlete status, these players had to earn a G.P.A of 3.50 or above, a varsity letter, and they must have been enrolled at Manhattan College for at least 2 semesters, from freshman to senior year. For a team to receive the All-Academic Team award, they are required to have a cumulative team G.P.A of 3.20, and all athletes whose names have appeared on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the required grade point average for the current academic year.
"I am truly proud and privilege to be a part of such a great group of scholars, athletes and human beings," said Erez Cohen.
