It's a new school year, and everyone seems to be trying to do something different and, well, new. Clubs and societies are in high hopes of getting more members involved. Meanwhile, the Quadrangle itself is trying to make the newspaper more engineering friendly. Of course students are working harder for those 4.0s. Our spotlight for today will be focused on both the Society of Women Engineers and the Hellenic Society.
The Society of Women Engineers is starting off fresh with a brand new cabinet and many upcoming events. One of their major projects is to set up a tutoring/studying sessionto take place a few times a week in the Leo Engineering Building.
According to Sara Paniccia, Vice President of the SWE, the tutoring program is something that she hopes "will help out any student in need, especially the freshmen." In addition to setting up tutoring within Manhattan College, they also plan to work with middle and high school students.
"Working with younger children will give them (the children) a chance to see what kind of options they have when they grow older," stated Connie Pisani, President of the SWE. "We hope to be good role models for them-set the right example of going to school and getting an education."
Other than tutoring, the Society of Women Engineers is trying to make this semester somewhat fun for its members. They've signed up for a Happy Hour-with live music and food.
"For a small fee, people can stop by, mingle, and relax after a long day of class," said Fariha Avais, Treasurer of SWE.
Along with the obligations of being a treasurer, Fariha is busy at work with the SWE's website. For now, a Calendar of Events has been set up to inform each member of future meetings and other activities ranging from the school's Open House [Sunday, October 24th], to the club's annual dinner(s).
"The members can go onto the site and chat with one or more of the cabinet members or just browse to see if they've missed anything important," said Fariha.
