The Jasper women's soccer team seems to be in a slump this season as they struggle to catch a victory. They began the week with another defeat, which totals six losses this season so far.
Sunday, Sept. 19th was a windswept one. The sun came out, and showed promise for the one o'clock start. The Jaspers played their Bronx rival, the Fordham Rams. The first half of the game took a toll on the starting players, though Kiera Fox spent a good 45 minutes in goal. She looked very defensive with her competitive attitude and fiery persona. She allowed only two goals in the first half to total six saves, before letting Kelly Boyle take her turn in net. For the remainder of the game she showed good recovery in goal. Fox, however, desperately needed her team to step up and help her by scoring. She did well, wit this being her first game as goaltender this season. Fox gave up two goals in the second half and tackled five saves.
While the Atlantic 10 Conference is no World Cup, The Jaspers showed up ready to play. There was a lot of tripping over one another, especially in the first half, as Fordham tested their footwork on Manhattan. With few elbows and few calls by the refs, the crowd reaction was limited, which could be expected. The Jaspers were a little hesitant with the ball, but with eight minutes to go they picked up the pace. Though they kept the ball outside their half of the field for most of the game, they went back and forth over half field and didn't keep the pressure on long enough to score. The Jaspers couldn't complete a corner kick with 28 minutes left on the clock. The Fordham women took their time testing their skills on Manhattan. Seventeen minutes into the game, Laura Muzzatti took the first goal. Breean Daley played well, scoring off an assist from Holly Laubinger thirty minutes into the first half. The second half showed little improvement from the Jaspers, but the Rams kept tabs on the board by racking up a goal in the fifty-fifth minute via Leah Jerome and Laubinger coming strong and punching one in with twenty-two minutes remaining in regulation time. By this point, and throughout most of the game, the bench looked dead. It would be nice to see a little more enthusiasm from the players, but understandably with a 0-6-0 record it is certainly hard to keep up high hopes and spirit. The Manhattan women's soccer team is capable of doing better. It is still early in the season to determine how the Jaspers will end up. They still have some great upcoming games that will help them improve their record. They will also need the support of the school to keep their spirit high.
