If you have been slightly disappointed with the performance of pro golfers Tiger and Phil lately, then feast your eyes on these golfers. Despite the loss of two seniors, the Manhattan Jaspers golf team is all set and excited for a new year. The team is comprised of 12 players. Five freshmen are included in these 12 players. With the assistance of these new recruits, the team is optimistic of achieving a better record this year.
While the fall is not prime season for the sport of golf, it will prepare the Jaspers for a very exciting spring season. The Jaspers are already off to a good start this season. On Sept. 11, the Jaspers hosted the Manhattan Invitational Championship, and got great team results. At this event the Jaspers had good performances from upper classmates as well as the freshmen. They faced St. Peter's and St. Joseph's at the event. The Manhattan Jaspers were crowned the champions of the Invitational. Scott Burton, a freshman from La Jolla, California, shot a 75 and was awarded a medallist honors. Senior Tim Hand carded a round 76, co-captain, Danny Sirico, carded a round 86. Sirico finished second at the Invitational. The Jaspers had a score of 315.
The following invitational for the Jaspers had a different outcome, however, Manhattan proved that they still belong among the best. At the event that took place on Sept. 21, in West Orange, New Jersey, the Jaspers defeated St. Peter's, 312-334. When they faced Wagner, however, they fell by only three strokes, 309-312. Hand came off second after scoring a four-over-par 75 for Manhattan. Burton finished off in fourth place, Barringer placed sixth and Chris Vieau finished in the seventh place for the Jaspers.
This week, however, the team will participate in the Susquehana College Fall Invitational in Druma, Pennsylvania. October 15th marks the official end of the fall outings with the East Stroudsburg Invitational, which also takes place in Pennsylvania. In the spring, the team will head to further tournaments in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The team hopes to develop as the fall season is ready to come to an end. In the meantime, the Jaspers continue to practice.
