All New York football fans were brought to their feet on Sunday when both the Jets and the Giants came out victorious.
The Jets beat the San Diego Chargers 34-28 and improved their record to 2-0 on the season. This is only the second time in 11 seasons that the Jets have gone undefeated through their first two games.
Curtis Martin rushed for two first quarter touchdowns. He led the game in rush yards with 119 and etched his name in the New York Jets history books. Martin now has the most rush yards of any player in the Jets organization with 8,185. He broke Freeman McNeil's previous record of 8,074. This puts Martin's total rushing yards up to 11,984 in 10 seasons in the National Football League. He is now 11th on the all-time list, just behind Thurman Thomas.
The highlight for the San Diego Chargers came in the 2nd quarter when Tim Dwight ran back a kick off for an 87-yard touchdown. The Chargers were no match, however, for the Jets stifling defense. They were able to intercept 2 passes from Drew Brees, the San Diego quarterback, and recover 2 lost fumbles from the Chargers. The biggest standout on the Jets defense was rookie safety Erik Coleman. He proved to everyone he was ready to play in the NFL by recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass.
As the Jets defense was dominant, holding pro bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson to just 87 yards rushing, just as much can be said for the Jets offense. Chad Pennington led the offense, going 22 for 29 with 258 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. Santana Moss contributed by catching the ball 4 times for a total of 97 yards.
With just under 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, the Chargers were looking for some late game heroics. The Jets defense had held Brees to 8 completions on 19 attempts for 146 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions throughout the game. The Chargers did not see much hope for Brees this late in the 4th. They turned to 41-year-old back up quarterback Doug Flutie to march them down the field. Although down by 13 points at the time, Flutie came in and put on a show. He went 7 for 16 with 77 yards passing. To complete the drive, the veteran quarterback ran the ball for 6 yards and a touchdown.
