Gambling Themes Outlawed for Nevada State Quarter
Las Vegas, NV- Federal Officials recently prohibited the use of commercial images on Nevada's state quarter. The state treasury drew up over 500 ideas, with their hopeful frontrunners as the Las Vegas skyline, slot machines, and playing cards. The decision came from the idea that the treasury does not believe their should be commercial items on the quarter, even though Tennessee has a banjo representing the country music industry, and Indiana's representation depicts a racecar for the Indianapolis 500.

The U.S. mint also rejected the states suggestions to add silver from mines in Nevada to the quarters. They did, however, approve 5 of the themes which are wild horse, miner, bristlecone pine, bighorn sheep, and snowcapped mountain. Soon, the 5 themes will be voted on by the people of Nevada online and by polls. State Treasurer Brian Krolicki said "We want to leave it up to Nevadans. It is Nevada's quarter, not the treasurer's quarter." (Source: Boston.com)

National Disaster's Rock the West Coast
Paso Robles, CA- Two earthquakes struck in the same place earlier this week only a few days after a temblor occurred in Southern California. The epicenter, Parkfield, has been studied for quite some time because of its location directly on the San Andreas Fault. The quakes, occurring at 5:22 and 12:04 a.m. on Saturday, were 4.0 and 3.2 magnitudes on the Richter scale.

County officials reported that they have seen no injuries or serious damages from Saturday's quakes; however the 6.0 earthquake that struck California on Tuesday damaged some homes and a winery. These three quakes are only part of the hundreds of temblors that have hit the area in the past week. (Source: Boston.com)
