See Into the Future: Manhattan 2025

In recent years, Manhattan College has become one of New York's premier Catholic colleges. With its location being one of its primary draws, Manhattan offers the best of both worlds: a beautiful green campus, but outside its walls is a city to explore.

If we look at where our school is now, it is clear that it has a lot to offer. Students can pretty much study anything they choose, between the School of Arts, newly - accredited School of Business, School of Science, School of Education, and School of Engineering. With an open 24 -7 O'Malley library, students always have access to the school's computer labs and other resources. Draddy gym and its fitness center offers recreational and fitness facilities to students. Manhattan is also becoming more and more a resident school, offering dorms and apartments. The developing Student Union (Thomas Hall, 2nd floor) is currently assisting in the integrating of commuter students into campus life.

But where is Manhattan going? Society and our environment are constantly changing and therefore we need to change. In order to maintain and improve its current reputation, Manhattan College needs to take a look at the future.

With this in mind, the administrators of Manhattan College have already devised its strategic plan. The solution is Manhattan 2025. Manhattan 2025 are the school's plans for the future. It is an outline of what needs to happen in order for the school to move forward and change with the times. It is the possibility of what this institution can really be, if built up to its fullest potential.

Manhattan 2025 is a mission. To the current students of Manhattan College, it is simply a phrase. Broken down, Manhattan 2025 will be a series of changes.

One of the first changes to be made is the stress put on academic excellence. Ernest Boyer, (scholar), once said, "good teaching and inspired research go hand in hand." The school has begun to convey this message to its faculty. As outlined in the strategic plan, the goal is to "enhance the opportunity for faculty excellence so that even more Manhattan faculty will proclaim that teaching is the 'finest work' they know."

Second, is that Manhattan College becomes known for its academic excellence. It is one thing to preach it, but it is surely another to be known for it.

The third and most significant transformation to be made is the effort to turn Manhattan from a local college to regional college. What the committee is aiming for is to gather more students from a 'triangle' that reaches from Washington D.C. to Boston and all the way out to the Great Lakes.
