Loosen Your Purses: You Can Shop on Madison

Serena Barresi

Issue date: 10/13/04 Section: Arts & Entertainment
Sure you have window-shopped on Madison Avenue. You have even stopped, counted and recounted the money in your wallet, and wondered how you could manage to afford those Miu Miu shoes or that Hermès bag. We have all been there, and you have probably settled on the fact that shopping on Madison Avenue is out of reach for college fashion hounds.

But you have never been to Michael's-The Consignment Shop for Women. The small upper east-side location is packed with handpicked, gently worn designer goods being sold for up to 70% off. Boasting "High Fashion Without High Prices" and "Fashion Worth a Second Look," Michael's buys and sells barely used items from Europe and America's top designers. Do not be worried about these styles being outdated; Michael's guarantees that all styles are current by not selling anything that is over two years old.

For those of you who have always believed that you would never find a store filled bargains on designer clothing and accessories, Michael's is the place where all of your past beliefs about discount designer shopping are shattered. Sure it is hard to believe that there is a place where a girl can find black leather Chanel pumps for $100 and black suede Manolo Blahnik flats for $110, but it is true! The shoe section alone is stocked with big designer names like Hermès, Prada, Jimmy Choo, and Gucci.

Move along to the circular sweater rack, filled with designers like Dolce and Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, and Oscar de la Renta. The selection includes cashmere and other fine knits in all styles and sizes. Along the opposing wall, bags are hung, in no particular order of style or designer. The two main stocked bag designers are Kate Spade and Prada, and the savings are unbelievable. A genuine Kate Spade mini tote for $40! That is probably less than many have paid for knock-offs on Canal Street.

Moving on the opposite side of the store there are designer fur coats, which are originally so high-priced that even the slashed prices are out of the average college student's price range. But stroll just a little further and you will find the perfect winter necessity-a designer coat. Here are pea coats, trench coats, and all different styles from top designers being offered at affordable prices.
