Manhattan College has finally made official a "diversity committee" on campus. The Diversity Committee will be in charge of sponsoring multicultural events celebrating the heritage of the various cultures represented around the campus. The board of the committee is made up of students, administrators, faculty, and staff. Together they brainstorm ideas for activities that can more completely represent the culture celebrated during the featured month.

Many of the events will revolve around art shows, readings, and film festivals but further input from other students for activity ideas are welcomed as well. Sponsored events are created as educational programs that enrich the lives of students by increasing awareness on the myriad cultures that are present on campus.

According to Vicki Cowan, Director of Human Resources, "The Diversity Committee is similar to an advisory committee in the sense that we're willing to co-sponsor events with already existing clubs."

"Together we can come up with better programs and counsel one another on what activities can be both educational and of more interest to the students," she continued. "The goal here is to involve the students and make these events personal so that they remember what they've witness and learn."

Members of the Diversity Committee want the students to learn from one another and come to appreciate how the differences in each culture can make life all the more richer. Through these events and the participation of students, they also hope to increase a sense of community on campus.

Manhattan College owes its diverse collection of cultures due to its location near the heart of New York City. Diversity is, after all, the pulse that keeps New York City alive, and this all the more reason for students to be aware of their surrounding neighbors.

"New York City is the face of diversity and Manhattan College is a part of this great City," said Vanessa Kilpatrick, Assistant Director of Admissions. "Within Manhattan College, there are so many beautiful cultures represented and through this committee Manhattan College is acknowledging that diversity and celebrating it."

The first series of events will be in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and will begin the week of October 11th. Future events will honor Black History and Women's Heritage Month. Many other cultures will also be celebrated through various events, and students should feel free to contact any of the members with their ideas for these upcoming festivities.
