Lack of Student Response at Food Forum

Issue date: 10/13/04 Section: News
On Wednesday, September 29, 2004, the first Food Forum was held at 5:00 pm in Dante's Den. While there were numerous flyers throughout campus about the event, only ten students attended the forum, two of which were running it, Blair Lampe and Antonia Conti. Dennis McCoskey and Karen Sepulveda were the Sodexho employee's answering the questions raised by students.

Returning students noticed the many changes in the cafeterias this year. The new style of food has been implemented by thirty to forty other schools including Fordham University. While some students have enjoyed the changes, other complained that the quality of food has stayed the same and even gotten worse since the beginning of the semester.

One complaint about the setup in Locke's Loft was that the lines were too long. Students found the switching of the Exhibition and the Sandwich Station made the lines in the cafeteria even longer than they previously were. Due to this Sodexho changed these locations back to their original places.

The change that many students have complained about was the taking away of the grilled chicken, grilled vegetables and the other food in the vegetarian station. Recently the vegetarian station was brought back however Mr. McCoskey cannot offer the grilled chicken as many times per week as he previously was. Last year grilled chicken was offered to students up to four times per week. He stated that it can be brought back up to two times per week, but that is all. McCoskey stated that, "grilled chicken, chicken nuggets and chicken patties are on the menu as specials." Due to the amount of grilled chicken Sodexho went through last school year there were money issues and this is the reason it is not going to be as available as last year.

The biggest issue that many students raise is the lack of healthy food available for dinner. Nicole Legronague stated that "a little more of an option for healthy food" would improve the cafeteria. Blair Lampe proposed putting stickers on the food stating whether it is low in fat, high in fat, etc. Also, the only diet soda offered in the cafeteria is diet Pepsi. Hopefully in the near future another diet soda will be offered, possibly diet Sierra Mist. Moreover, Antonia Conti put in a request for healthier cereal. For example, Kashi or another cereal that is high in fiber. In response to these student's concerns Mr. McCloskey mentioned a new program they will be implementing shortly called Mind, Body and Soul which will help students to eat healthier.
