On September 28, 2004, The Association of American Publishers announced the beginning of the Book Yourself a Career Campaign- a national effort to diversify the book publishing industry. The campaign will promote Bookjobs.com, a website that provides information about the publishing industry and entry-level job listings from major U.S. book publishers. The campaign is geared toward schools with diverse student populations and high academic standards- like Manhattan College- to increase awareness of publishing as a career choice for students in a range of academic disciplines.

According to a Manhattan College press release, the association's Diversity/Recruit and Retain Committee launched the campaign to create a publishing workforce that reflects the community. Bookjobs.com is built with college students in mind- it describes types of publishers, publishing jobs, and matches between majors and departments in publishing houses.
Nearly 300 companies- including Houghton Mifflin, McGaw-Hill, Penguin, HarperCollins, and Random House, and Time Warner- list jobs and information.

"American publishers are committed to ensuring that all segments of our great, diverse population are represented in publishing," said Pat Schroeder, AAP President and CEO. "Since books are like a culture's DNA, everyone's voice should be heard."

"We want book publishing to be a much more visible career choice," says Bridget Marmion, Marketing Director of Houghton Mifflin and chair of the Diversity/Recruit and Retain Committee. "We want students of all backgrounds and interests to apply, so we'll be reaching out to majors in history, business, art, and the sciences, as well as literature and journalism. The bookjobs.com website will serve this purpose perfectly; it is a unique resource in offering jobs from so many companies in the same industry."

"This site works well because it is easy to navigate, it is centralized, and it eliminates the need to visit individual publishers' websites for information about jobs. I will be referring students, both past and present to this site. I can't say enough about it," says David Unger, Director of The Publishing Certificate Program of the City College of New York.

The Association of American Publishers is the principal trade association for the U.S. book publishing industry, and includes most of the major commercial book publishers in the United States, as well as smaller and medium-sized houses, non-profit publishers, university presses, and scholarly societies. The campaign and website should prove to be a valuable resource for Manhattan College students.
