With the newly elected freshman class officers ready to begin their duties, members of the Student Government lent a helping hand in hosting a Halloween party for freshmen, to give the new officers a chance to host their first event, and to give the freshman class another opportunity to come together and meet new people. Held in Plato's Cave, the acting freshman class president, Claire Walsh, worked to set up the food and decorations along with the other officers. The party, which was Claire's idea is a new event, and began at eight with an 80s theme. The slogan for the night was "We're gonna party like it's 1989." With the small fog machine going, tables set with plenty of food, and decorations covering the area, small groups began to trickle in, and it was not long before a nice group of freshmen had gathered in Plato's. As the night progressed, those already at the party called friends still on campus and the group became much bigger in a short amount of time.

The highlight of the night was the costume contest. Each contestant performed to a song of their choosing for about a minute, and then audience chose a winner. Costumes ranged from celebrities such as Enrique Iglesias, Madonna, and Mary Kate Olsen, the always dependable ghost costume, nerds, hicks, and even fellow classmates. With everything from elaborate hairstyles, wigs, and outrageous makeup, to a simple outfit, the audience had much to choose from. Some chose a simple ghost costume, which consisted of a sheet with holes cut for the eyes; others, elaborate 80s outfits, complete with pumps, leg warmers, and, or course, the big teased hair. Ten-gallon hats, cowboy boots, freckles, and braids were a also a popular choice of attire. The creativity and sense of humor of the class of 2008 was certainly showcased in the assortment and originality of the costumes. Each contestant entertained the audience with their dancing and a song, appropriate for their costume, of course. Audience members were treated to everything from a rendition of Enrique Iglesias' "Hero," to the theme of "Ghostbusters" and even a few country songs, along with current hits.

While everyone performed well and had an original costume, a winner had to be chosen, and it was Charlotte Maietto's inflatable cowgirl costume that took top honors, earning her a new MP3 player. The costume, which was inflated by a small fan on the inside of the costume, was complete with a cowboy hat and boots. She completed the look by drawing freckles across her cheeks. After the contest, all of the contestants danced together before the others returned to the dance floor.

Overall, the party had a very good turnout for a Thursday night, and all who were there had a great time.

Lisa LoFaso said, "This is one happening party."

Kellyn Kearny agreed, saying "It's a good time."

The first event for the new freshman class student council was a success, and sets a precedent for future events, which are sure to be just as great as their first.
