Manhattan College offers a variety of different intramural sports to the student body, and Director Tim McIntee and assistants Don Semminella and Tom Herrick work hard on making intramural sports desirable, enjoyable, and available for all students who are interested in participating or joining a sports team.

According to coach McIntee, last year 998 students participated in different intramural sports. This year, McIntee has high hopes for the program; he wishes that this year more students would join any sport of their choice. The intramural sports offered are Flag Football, Co-ed Volleyball, Co-ed Basketball, Kickboxing, FYE- Tour for Basketball Shoot Out, Softball, Cheerleading, Indoor Soccer, Floor Hockey, Thanksgiving Day Run also known as the "Turkey Trot" and the Easter Bunny Run. The last two running activities are done before the Manhattan College breaks in the fall and the spring semester.

Intramural sports are good for students to spend time with their friends. It also gives students the ability to see what it is like to be in an athletic team and all the essence of teamwork. As coach McIntee said "it's also a way to keep the students fit."

The three most popular intramural sports are Co-ed Basketball, Flag Football, and Co-ed Volleyball. Among these, the number one sport is Co-ed Basketball. There are 48 basketball teams and these are divided into three divisions. Division A is the best and it is full of extremely talented players, Division B is for mixed players, and Division C is an all girl division which is only offered if a lot of girls are on the team.

You might be asking yourself how are these teams promoted and what must a student do to join them? Well, posting can be found for all sports on campus. Signs are put up on the student dormitories and different bulletin boards are all over the campus and in the gym. These postings will tell a student that there is a sign up day and for which sport the sign up day is.

Intramural sports are for students that would like to join a sports team and any student is welcomed. Coach McIntee said, "Students can organize their own team. All they need is their Manhattan College identification card to prove that they are a student and one very important thing needed is the participation of a good number of people in order to form the team." This means that if students do not find a sport that interests them, and they would like to create their own team, they can do so freely.

Students who participate in these sports are also recommended to use the gym, which is open late afternoons from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Coach McIntee said that this is not a problem for students, because they visit the gym very frequently and, in fact, they like having access to a gym on campus.

The intramural program has been very successful with all the student participation. There is, however, one major issue the program is dealing with. Coach McIntee informed us about the limited resources to hold all these recreational activities. The gym cannot cover for all sports; however, coach McIntee said that the program is still successful. Off campus sports are played in Van Cortland and all others are played here at Manhattan College.
