The men's tennis team competed last weekend on Oct 25th at the intercollegiate tennis association Northeast Regional held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, VA.
The team did not place on the top of the event, but still proved to be consistent by competing against very competitive schools. At the event Diego Alvarado and Erez Cohen also competed this weekend making it to the Round of 64. Erez Cohen played Johnny Lu from Yale University and beat him in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to Mikhail Bekker of Penn, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. Sophomore Diego Alvarado competed against Penn State's David Lynn in the first round beating him in two sets, 6-4, 7-6. In Alvarado's second round of play he lost to Mario Arce of St. Bonaventure, 6-3, 7-6.
The team is performing exceptionally well this season. Erez Cohen, senior, majoring in Government said, "This season has been going well and a couple of players have won some individual tournament. We have proven this semester to be one of the strongest teams in the northeast." Cohen's confidence in his team and his determination to rank first is the reason for the team's good performance so far.
Senior Alon Cohen beat Craig Rubin of Penn in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of play. Alon fell in the Round of 64 after Akshay Rao of Columbia defeated him in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Moreover, Erez Cohen said that the "Northeast invitational went well for Diego Alvarado and Alon Cohen who both won their individual flights. Everyone else also did well although they did not win."
The players on the team realize that losing is also part of the team. Losing can also better a team because they will eventually learn from experience. Erez Cohen commented on the team losing some matches in the season, "Yes, we have all lost games but almost all of us have winning records and we are all doing well."
When asked about the experience so far, Erez said, " It is going well. All the players on the team are exceptional on and off the court. We have great respect for our two coaches who are doing an exceptional job."
Also, Erez confessed that among other challenges "...getting court time since we don't have our own facilities" is an ordeal that needs to be overcome.
Future goals and objectives for Erez are to "win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and proceed to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) every year from now until forever. Also, go undefeated next semester and get nationally ranked."
The team will compete again this weekend, Friday, October 29 through Sunday, October 31 at the Penn Classic held at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Manhattan men's tennis team is on its way to once again prove their talent. The team is working hard to achieve all their goals and aspirations. They are going to face all the challenges with a sense of optimism and they have faith in their teammates.
