Issue date: 11/3/04 Section: Sports
While the Lady Jasper soccer team has been struggling this season, they were able to defeat Canisius on Sunday October 24 with a score of 4-0. This win increased their record to 2-13-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition.

Junior Jaclyn Pancotti opened the game with the first goal against the Canisius Griff, with an assist from Sophomore Katie Kuntz. Pancotti would go on to score one more goal in the second half, unassisted, as did Kuntz. Also adding to the victory was freshman Courtney Hughes, who scored her first collegiate goal in the second half. Freshman goalie Alicia DeFino helped out her team by keeping the game scoreless, leading to her third shutout of the season.

While this is only the second win of the season for the Japers, they continue to remain in good spirits. Freshman, midfielder, Miki Coni, said they are still happy with the season, "we work really hard and have many opportunities for goals, but we just can't seem to make them into the net." Junior Brandy Luther agrees with Coni, saying, "we've had so many shots at the goal, but we've hit the cross bars and posts so many times this year."

The ladies, who practice five days a week for two hours, have two games a week, one on Friday and one on Sunday. Freshman Heather Herrmann said, "Although our record has not been as strong as we would have liked, we still have a really good time." Coni continued to say, "we all get along with each other really well both on and off the field. We have really good chemistry with each other and with our coaches."

Coach John Sanchez has been Manhattan's head soccer coach since 1997. He also has been an athletics coordinator for the past four years. Since he has joined the team, the Jaspers have won 245 games including an 8-9-1 in 2001, which was the second most in wins in team history. Assistant coach Shawn Tarquinio is in his third season here at Manhattan, and contributes greatly to the team. According to Freshman Kate Garrido both coaches have been extremely supportive during this difficult season, "they are really encouraging, and they never give up on us."
