The wait finally ended for all anxious fans of the FOX hit "The O.C." on Thursday November 4, 2004. The second season of the teen-driven, hour-long drama premiered, meeting fans expectations.
Millions of fans, including many Manhattan College students, tuned in to see how their favorite characters spent their summer in their lavish homes in Newport Beach, California, after being shocked by last season's finale.
Fans last saw the show's main character, Ryan Atwood, leaving his new family, the Cohens, to be with his past girlfriend, Theresa in his hometown of Chino. Theresa, who came between Ryan and his O.C. girlfriend, Marissa, shocked both the characters and the viewers when she revealed that she was pregnant with Ryan's baby at the conclusion of last season. After hearing this news, Ryan broke the news to Marissa, who was heartbroken that he was leaving, but understood why he had to go. Besides losing her boyfriend, Marissa was also forced to move back home with her mother and her mother's new husband, the wealthy Caleb Nichols.
Ryan's departure from the O.C. not only affected Marissa, but it also caused controversy in the Cohen household. Upset over losing his one true friend, Seth Cohen decided to move away too. Leaving a note for his parents, Sandy and Kirsten, and his girlfriend, Summer, Seth packs his bags and was last seen by viewers sailing up the coast in his boat.
Last season's finale left many fans in the dark about their favorite characters' futures, and they were left questioning what would happen in the second season of the show.
Among the many twists and turns in the second season premiere entitled, The Distance, was that Seth had moved in with old rival, Luke and his gay father in Portland. This came as a shock to many fans that watched the tension between these two characters at the beginning of the first season. While the two were friendly when Luke departed from the show last year, no one ever expected them to be living together for the summer.
