On November 1, 2004, the new program created in partnership by Student Government and the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance called Jasperfit began. Jasperfit is a program, which will provide student personal trainers for the benefit of all students in Galligan Fitness Center. The student trainers will be available Monday through Thursday from four to six and seven to nine in the evening.
Kristen Caroll, the Mind and Body Chair of the Social Life Committee for along with Katy Whyte, an Exercise Science Major initially came up with the idea of providing personal trainers for students in the fitness center. It was then Dr. Keating who put the initial idea into effect.
There will be six different personal trainers available at the different times during the week. All of the trainers are students who are Exercise Science or Physical Education Majors. The six students are Jaclyn Mellilo, Julie Scott, Claudio Barbieri, Dan Murphy, Joe Damiani and Katy Whyte. All six students are certified by one of the national organizations that certify personal trainers. The three different organizations are Aerobic Fitness Association of America (AFAA), American Council of Exercise (ACE), and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
There are two functions, which Jasperfit wishes to provide. First is campus improvement. The trainers will educate students in fitness and even give each person a specific program tailoring toward his/her fitness goals. The program will hopefully increase usage of the facilities offered on campus, including Galligan Fitness Center and the many classes provided, such as Intramural Athletics, Yoga, Kickboxing, and Pilates. Katy Whyte stated, "our goal via Jasperfit is fitness education in conjunction with addressing the national epidemic of obesity, coronary artery disease and elevated cholesterol."
The second function of Jasperfit is to provide the exercise science and physical education students an opportunity to gain experience in the field they wish to pursue. These are students that are certified to perform this service, so their skills are going unused without the program being offered. Whyte spoke about this part of the program by asking, "why not implement the talent we have in the physical education department?"
