Lady Jaspers win Exhibition Game against Gazelles, 83-49

The Manhattan Lady Jaspers hosted their first and only exhibition game of the 2004-2005 season against the New York Gazelles in Draddy Gymnasium on Friday Nov. 12. Manhattan seemed to be ready and set to go from the start of the game in their 83-49 blow out win over the Gazelles.
Manhattan started their exciting game with their impressive starters Caitlin Flood, Serra Sangar, Donnette (Shorty) Reed, Kristen Tracey and Joann Nwalfili. In the first half the Lady Jaspers were led by both Donnette (Shorty) Reed with 11 points and freshman Gabriel Cottrell from Arlington Heights, IL with 12 in the first half. The Lady J's put on a great show for the fans that came out to support them. They went into the half with a 50-30 lead over the Gazelles.
The second half was even more thrilling as the team work was noticed more greatly. The Gazelles tried to keep up with the Lady J's but fail to through much of the second half. The Lady J's were great both on their offense and defense. They later started a 17-1 run with less than a minute left in the game. This run assured their 83-49 victory over the Gazelles.
The freshmen really stepped up in their first ever collegiate level game. As mentioned above Cottrell led the freshmen in scoring with 12 points, she was 4-4 from the field and played a total of 17 minutes. Joann Nwafili helped the Lady J's significantly with her 11 points, three steals and three rebounds. Aubrie Dellinger and Caitlin Flood each contributed six points for the Lady J's. New junior recruit, Lupe Godinez was 3-3 from the field, she scored 11 points and had four assist and three rebounds in the game. The freshmen and junior recruit shot decently from the field.
The returning players for Manhattan continue to prove their dominance in this game. Senior forward, Serra Sangar scored 11 points, defensively she was amazing, she had three steals and a total of 10 rebounds. Kristen Tracey contributed five points and had three rebounds. Reed was the key player of the game; she scored a total of 21 points, she was also great on defense with her seven steals and five rebounds. Overall, Manhattan had five players in double digits. The way Manhattan handled this game is what will be expected of them in the regular season that starts this Friday against rivals Fordham in the Bronx at 7:00 p.m.
