Issue date: 11/17/04 Section: Sports
The spotlight is on seniors Alon and Erez Cohen. Since being crowned champions at Princeton Invitational earlier this season in Sept. The brothers and team have competed well this season with their series of small downs, comebacks and victories.

Not shortly after the Princeton Invitational, Alon Cohen and sophomore Diego
Alvarado finished first, beating their opponents in the championship matches at
the Northeast Invitational held at Brown University. Erez on the other hand
finished in sixth place. He won against Mike Goldman in the first round but
then lost to Dave Reichsfeld of Maryland. When he played for fifth place he
beat Sebastian Salas but fell to Michael Scherer shortly after.

The team experienced a let down at the ITA All American Championships. Diego
Alvarado and Zoltan Bus fell to their opponents in the first round of the
tournament. The feeling of failure did not last long since ten days later the
team successfully managed to defeat their MAAC opponent, Rider University in
Lawrence, NJ. After the disappointment at ITA in Tennessee, Zoltan Bus led the
team at the number one singles spot. The team defeated Rider in seven matches.
Bus and Erez Cohen crushed sophomore Ragdee Saberon and senior Elliot Eichu
playing number one doubles. The Alvarado brothers also competed well, beating
juniors Chris Stanco and Mike Greenberg.

On Oct. 22, the Jaspers started the ITA Northeast Regional where only the top
tennis players competed, with Lady Luck on their side. In the singles match,
Erez Cohen beat Johnny Lu in three sets. Last but certainly not least in
competing was Alon Cohen pounding his opponent Craig Rubin of Penn State in
three sets. The Cohen brothers managed to reach the Round of 64. They led a
competitive game before falling, Erez to Mikhail Bekker of Penn and Alon to
Akshay Rao of Columbia. Bus made it to round of 32 before falling to Nick
Goldberg of Brown, making him Manhattan's top finisher.
