With Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents Niagara and Canisius upcoming in their schedule, the Jaspers Women Swimming team is looking to continue their winning ways. After winning both of their meets last week against Sacred Heart and Bridgeport, the team stands at 3-2 overall, 0-1 in MAAC play.
The next two meets on Saturday Nov. 13th loom huge for the Lady Jaspers. They lost their MAAC opener to Siena, 52-34. After the meets against Niagara and Canisius, there are only two more MAAC games on the schedule (Feb. 4th against Fairfield and Feb. 12th against St. Peter's. Any sort of slip up this weekend could result in the team racing and fighting for a spot in the MAAC Championships, which take place in late February.
If the Lady Jaspers perform this week as they did last week, there should be no worries heading into this weekend's meets. Last Friday, they just got by Sacred Heart, 105-99. Sophomore Courtney Arduini and freshman Maura McGowan each won two individual events and were part of the 200 medley relay team which broke the Manhattan school record by two seconds. Arduini won the 100 fly in a time of 1:04.10 and also took the 100 breast with a time of 1:12.85. Meanwhile, McGowan won the 50 free with a time of 26.50, and also placed first in the 100 free with a time of 59.63. Along with sophomores Nicole Mason and Sarah Szotak, the relay team swam in a record time of 2:00.44 to win the race.
The next day saw the Lady Jaspers gain the same result, another victory. They defeated Bridgeport 79-58, giving them the 3-2 record they currently hold. Junior and Co-captain Heather Kennedy won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 13:03.30 to help pace the Lady Jaspers. Arduini again won two events, winning the 100 back (1:07.30) and the 200 free (2:10.02). Sophomore Rachele Testa also contributed with a win in the 100 breast in a time of 1:18.17. Testa, along with junior Lauren Sullivan, senior Ashley Rooney, and freshman Michelle LaTouche, won the 200-medley relay with a time of 2:10.06. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Mason, Arduini, Szotak, and McGowan posted the second-fastest time in Manhattan College history with a time of 1:48.67, just missing the record time of 1:48.10 which was set at the 2004 MAAC Championships last February.
After this weekend's meets, the Lady Jaspers have two out of conferences meets against NJIT and Hunter College, both meets on the road. They then get a needed Thanksgiving break and return to face St. Joe's and SUNY Old Westbury, with both of those meets also on the road. They complete their schedule with three home appearances against C.W. Post, Fairfield, and a two meet finale against St. Peter's and St. Joe's. By then we will know if they will be prepared to take over the MAAC Championship.
