On the heels of a successful season, the Manhattan College Jaspers look forward to this upcoming season with familiar faces, and some new recruits.
As the team of 2003-04 ended in a finish that brought prominence to Manhattan's basketball program, some key players went on to improved things. Under the watchful eye of Jaspers, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) fans, Manhattan College will have to live up to the expectations placed on them after their successful ESPN Bracket Buster game, and the Bracket Buster they will compete in this season as well.
Joining the team this year are four freshmen: Curtis Anderson, Arturo Dubois, Cecil Lee, and Jeff Xavier. Anderson, a 6-foot guard/forward from Cincinnati, OH, joins the team after leading Laurinburg Prep to a 26-6 record in his last season at the high school. Anderson was named the Most Valuable Player at the Demetrious Johnson Charitable Foundation All-Star Game, and earned a spot on the 2004 National Prep School Invitational Tournament. In his hometown, Anderson was placed on the Cincinnati Enquirer's All-City team.
Joining Anderson at the front of the court is Arturo Dubois. Dubois, a 6'8" Forward from Harlem, New York, scored an average 21 points and 11 rebounds last season on the Rice High School basketball team. Dubois helped his team to a remarkable 22-6 record last season, and was placed on the Second Team of the Catholic High School Athletic Association's All-City team. Dubois was also named on the Fourth Team All State after his season ended last year.
Anderson and Dubois will eventually develop into important players for the Jaspers. "I see CJ [Anderson] and Arturo as guys that can be huge keys to this season as impact freshmen," said Gonzales of the two new players."
Alongside Anderson and Dubois, Cecil "CJ" Lee will join the team after successful seasons at Pittsford Sutherland High School. Hailing from Pittsford, NY, Lee was placed on the First Team All-State after his senior season. A 6 foot Guard, Lee averaged 22 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds per game his junior year. A two-time All-Greater Rochester selection, Lee expects to make a big difference on the team this year as they plan to build on the success of last year.
Many people see and express Lee's talent. These same people believe that he will play an important role on the team. "I think CJ has a promising future in this program. He will provide depth for us at both guard positions this season and his abilities on both ends of the floor, along with his intelligent play, will enable him to play an important role for us this year," said Bobby Gonzales, Head Coach of the men's basketball team.
Jeff Xavier from Pawtucket, RI and the St. Raphael Academy is the final freshman on the 2004-2005 season's roster. Named on the All-Tournament team at the 2004 National Prep Invitational Tournament, Xavier helped his team to the Rhode Island Division I-AA Semifinals last season. Averaging 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, Xavier rounds out Manhattan's Freshman Guards.
An optimistic coach, an eager team, and an excited campus look forward to the upcoming season, and the work of these four freshman.
