Sean Sendall

Issue date: 11/24/04 Section: Sports
New York football was looking to bounce back after a couple tough losses last week. The New York Jets, boasting a 6-2 record, were facing the tough Baltimore Ravens team who had a record of 5-3. The New York Giants, with a 5-3 record, were up against the Arizona Cardinals with a lowly record of 3-5. Unfortunately both New York football teams came up on the short end of the stick. The Jets fell 20-17, and the Giants also came up just a few points shy of a win with a score of 17-14.
Due to an injury to Chad Pennington last week the Jets were forced to start their back up quarterback Quincy Carter. Despite being his first start this season, Carter completed 13 passes on 22 attempts for a total of 175 yards. He was also able to gain 22 rushing yards in key plays during the game to keep the Jets alive. Unfortunately he was unable to get the ball in the end zone for a touchdown pass.
The Jets defense came up big from the beginning of the game. With a fourth down and one yard to score, John Abraham tackled running back Jamal Lewis at the line of scrimmage and forced a turnover on downs. After the turnover the Jets drove down the field and were able to punch the ball into the end zone with a one-yard Curtis Martin rush. Martin had another great game against the Ravens rushing for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Martin's second touchdown came later in the second quarter to put the Jets up 14-0. The Ravens were finally able to put points up on the board with just seconds left before halftime. Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller connected with rookie wide receiver Clarence Moore for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Boller connected on 19 of his 33 attempts for 2 touchdowns. Moore was the Ravens' leading receiver with 45 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns.
The third quarter only saw one field goal from Ravens kicker Matt Stover. The Ravens were inching their way back with a 14-10 score still in favor of the Jets. There wasn't another score until well into the 4th when Boller hooked up with Moore again for their 2nd touchdown of the game. Now with only minutes left in the game the Ravens were up 17-14. The determined Jets marched down the field and were able to tie the game with a Doug Brien field goal, and force overtime. Unfortunately the Jets fell to the foot of Matt Stover in OT when he kicked the game winning field goal to send both teams home with records of 6-3.
