Required Movies for the Holiday Season

Issue date: 12/8/04 Section: Arts & Entertainment
When the Christmas season comes around, many people have a particular movie or television special they must see. It is just not Christmas if one does not see Chevy Chase driving a car and end up beneath a tractor-trailer, or Charlie Brown and his tiny little Christmas tree, or even Ralphy in that ridiculous bunny suit.

There are specific cartoons that one must see every year. They are the classics; A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch that Stole Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and then of course Frosty the Snowman. A Muppet Christmas Carol can be thrown in here too since it has mostly puppets rather than people. These are the best-animated movies that Christmas has to offer. They are fun to watch and people of all ages enjoy them.

Then there are the top five Christmas movies for the season, at least in my opinion. Coming in at number five is White Christmas. I personally was not introduced to this movie until a couple of years ago. For those who have never seen this movie, it is a must see. Every person who listens to Christmas music is aware of Bing Crosby's White Christmas; well, this is the movie that it came from. The movie is extremely funny yet touching at the same time. It is about two men who were in war together and then ended up becoming big singing stars. They end up following two women to Vermont, and while there, they end up meeting their old army general. It is really a very good movie and the music is superb. It is a great Christmas film that one can sit down with his/her grandparents and enjoy.

The movie coming in number four is Miracle on 34th Street. This is one that has been re-done numerous times. The two most popular are probably the most recent, made in 1994 and then the one from the 1940's. Both are excellent films. It is interesting to watch them both because they are a bit different. The story is of a man who believes he is Santa Clause and there is an incident where he is arrested. There is a trial to decide whether or not the man truly is Santa; the two movies prove it in two different ways however. They are both great movies and are definitely required couch time for the holiday season.
