Although the selection process has already commenced, the Manhattan Magazine is still accepting contributions until December 10th for the 2005 issue. With junior Elysa Fein at the helm, the Magazine has begun the daunting task of evaluating all poems, stories, drawings, paintings, and photographs that will make up Manhattan College's literary magazine.

Although she has been a Managing Editor since her freshman year, Fein said taking over the Editor-in-Chief position was daunting. "I had to fill John Easterbrook's big shoes, so I had my work cut out for me," she says of former Editor-in-Chief Easterbrook, who graduated this past spring.

Fein also serves as the Magazine's writing editor, so once submissions are judged and forwarded to the editing process, all writing arrives in her mailbox. In addition, Fein has contributed poetry to both issues since her arrival at the college. Two of her newest poems will appear in the forthcoming Magazine.

Fortunately, Fein has a dedicated staff to carry the Magazine through its long production stages. Junior Kate Rieber recently transferred from Miami University (in Ohio) and has immediately taken the Managing Editor's position. Although Rieber and Fein are actually from the same town on Long Island, they had not met until donning Jasper green. Rieber also plans to contribute poetry, while a short story is in the works.

Lindsay Harrington is another one of Fein's devoted staff. In her second year at the Magazine, Harrington is a junior who has taken the Arts Editor position. She is an artist who works primarily with charcoal pencils and paint. In the Spring 2004 issue of the Magazine, two of Harrington's paintings were among the first to be printed in an eight-page spread in vibrant color. Although she has not yet decided on her contribution for the forthcoming issue, Harrington has contributed sketches and paintings to the past two issues.

Harrington works with 10 other Magazine editors-including Fein and Rieber-on the submission staff. Harrington pointed out that the submissions and editing process could be somewhat investigative. There was an incident last year where allegedly, a Magazine editor attempted to anonymously print the work of recently graduated Jasper. A staffer recognized the familiar writing style, and the piece was subsequently pulled from production.

"It can be an interesting creative process," Harrington said, smiling.

Due to creative demand, the Magazine has decided to extend its submission deadline until December 10th. All interested and aspiring artists of any kind, whose work can be reproduced on glossy paper, are invited to seek fame through publication.
