Bush Names Kerik as Ridge's Replacement
Washington, D.C.- Former New York City police commissioner was named as the new secretary of Homeland Security. Former secretary Ridge will remain at the post until February 11 of next year.
Kerik, who led the New York police department after September 11th, was sent to Iraq to help instruct the newly installed Iraqi police dept in 2003. It didn't hurt Kerik that Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Manhattan alum, made several phone calls to the Whitehouse requesting Kerik be named to the post.
In a press conference earlier this week, President Bush referred to Kerik as a "dedicated, innovative reformer who insists on getting results." The new secretary is also senior vice president of Giuliani Partners, a group spearheaded by the former Mayor.
"Bernard Kerik knows firsthand the challenges and needs of New York and other high-threat areas," Sen. Hillary Clinton said in a statement. As the new secretary, Kerik will have the opportunity to use that knowledge every day.

Student-Athlete unexpectedly dies during game
Houston, TX- 14-year-old Rachel Darden of the Michael E. DeBakey School for Health Professionals suddenly collapsed during her basketball game in front of a crowd from both her school and the opposing school. The cause of her death is still to be determined.
Grief counselors have been at both schools this week to speak with students that witnessed the horrible incident. "Everyday that she stepped in the gym, she stepped in with a smile from ear to ear. She played hard from the time she stepped onto the court until she stepped off," Madison High School Varsity Coach Anthony Fields said. "I'm trying to be strong because I have to be that way for my players. What we are trying to do right now is lean on each other. If we can lean on each other long enough then I think we'll be all right."
Rachel had passed all of her physicals before the basketball season, and her coaches and mother knew of no existing conditions that would have caused her death. Health officials will be examining Darden this week in the hope that they will find the cause of what happened. (Click2Houston.com)
