Issue date: 12/8/04 Section: Sports
The Men and Women's Crew team ended their fall season in mid-November. They have improved substantially since last year and are hoping for a successful spring season.
The Jaspers, led by coaches Mike and Karla Ward, spent the fall season training for and racing in regattas. They competed in the three mile Head of Connecticut race on October 10 in Middletown, Connecticut. The women rowed an intermediate eight person boat and finished 25th out of 26 teams in 27:08.82. The men's championship four finished in last place, right behind Brandeis University, in 27:59.12. The men's intermediate eight finished 19th out of 19 boats with a time of 21:14.39. A men's eight boat also finished in 49th place in 15:07.509 at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts on October 23.
The Head of the Fish regatta-a two and a half mile course-took place on October 30th in Saratoga, New York. Kathryn Vergo, Megan Roe, Liz Earley, Melissa Lynch, and coxswain Christina Bergonzo rowed a women's four and finished 29th out of 46 boats in 16:46.86. Bergonzo, Earley, Vergo, Lynch, and Roe also rowed a varsity eight with women's captain Emily Guedes, Alison Huza, Christina Diecidue, and Danielle Moreau. They finished in 15:04.54-24th out of 28.
Michael Vaccarello, Patrick Earley, Kevin O'Shea, Augustine Honore, and coxswain Nick Benedetto raced a men's novice four and ended in 16:17.12-19th out of 32 boats. Sean Nugent, Richard Rinelli, Roland Varriale, and Martin Walker rowed a varsity four and finished before Cazenovia Rowing Club in 16:32.01. Thomas McGrail, John Marinacci, Dennis O'Connell, and Rich Kakol rowed a lightweight four and finished in last out of seven boats in 16:46.30.
Men's captain Richard Kakol said, "The men's team has finished near the bottom in most of the regattas this season, but that's still an improvement from last year. The varsity team is better this year, but we did not do as well as we would've liked. Right now we're really rebuilding and improving. We only have two people with prior rowing experience, but we have nine new guys and two new girls on the Novice team."
