The Manhattan College men's basketball team seems to be on their way to another shot at the National Collegiate Athletic Association this year. With wins in their first three games the Jaspers continue to push forward with strong momentum.
This year the Jaspers are looking to top last season by going further then the second round of the NCAA competition. Junior Co-Captain Jason Wingate said, "We're going to need a lot of help from our freshmen, because we lost some great players last year. But the freshman guys are playing great. They aren't playing like ordinary freshmen, they are adding a lot to the team. They are improving everyday."
One of those freshmen Wingate talks about is his fellow Harlem native, Arturo DuBois. The six foot eight forward/center is the second leading scorer for the team with a total of 53 points, averaging 13.3 points per game. Also freshman guard/ forward C.J Anderson, averages 12.5 points per game and has a total of 50 points this far in the season. Anderson also earned himself the title of MAAC Rookie of the Week for the weeks ending November 21 and November 28. Freshman, guard Jeff Xavier, has also contributed to the Jaspers. In their game against MAAC competitor, Fairfield, Xavier scored 11 points. While the Jaspers lost the game in double overtime, Xavier's points made a significant dent in the score.
Senior Co-Captain, Peter Mulligan, who is currently the leading scorer for the Jaspers having 84 points in four games, agreed with Wingate that the freshman are doing well. He said, " They are crazy talented, they are the key to the team right now. CJ and Arturo are doing a great job."
Although it might be too early to tell who their biggest rival will be, Mulligan thinks their matches against Niagara will be very exciting competitions. He said, " Niagara is a big rival of ours. The last two years our games were pretty close. I think they will come on strong when we play them, but if we just keep working as a team I think we have a good shot of beating them."
