After a successful season last year, the Lady Jaspers begin the 2004-05 season with a 2-1 record, and a team that should prove to be the school's strongest to date. Beating Fordham and Bucknell University, the Lady Jaspers are bolstered by strong starters, and an overall record that is just shy of a .500 average.
For the 27th season of play for the Lady Jaspers, the team hopes to improve on their 2003 playoff berth with a series of wins both at home and on the road. Earning a spot in the top ten MAAC ranked teams, the work of Preseason All-MAAC Second Team player Donnette Reed, and starters Kristen Tracey, Joann Nwafill, Caitlin Flood, and Serra Sangar shows a potential that could give the Lady Jaspers enough momentum to propel them into far in the MAAC Championships. Reed, with 96 minutes of play so far, a field goal average of 36 with 16 so far this season, and nine rebounds in just three games, is a great asset to the team. Reed, when combined with 35 combined field goals, and 17 combined rebounds, the team is expected to have a successful season, and a profitable postseason.
In their season opening game against rival Fordham University, the team shot 20 field goals in the second quarter, and 64 points overall leading them to a four-point victory over the Lady Rams. In their second game of the season against Syracuse University, the team was held to a 28.3 field goal percentage, as they were defeated 61-45. Bouncing back from the disappointing loss on the road, the Lady Jaspers beat Bucknell University's Lady Bison 77-49 in their home opener in the Draddy Gymnasium. Showing a strong defense, and a stronger offense, the Lady Jaspers showed a prowess that all but guaranteed a successful postseason.
After facing the Lady Gales last Thursday, the Lady Jaspers showed once again their skills both defensively and offensively, supporting the high accolades the team received under the guidance of veteran coach Myndi Hill. Hill, an accomplished coach from St. Francis College, and East Tennessee State, gave St. Francis one of its most successful year to-date with a record of 23-8; a record that ties the school's highest winning percentage. Hill left St. Francis as the third most successful coach in the school's history. In her second year as the coach for the Lady Jaspers, Hill intends on building upon the success of the team. Although stifled by injury last year, Hill hopes to improve on last year's positive results despite the complications the team faced.
With a successful history, and a promising future, the Lady Jaspers continue through what appears to be a prosperous season for Manhattan College Women's Basketball program.
