The winter break did not start off so good for the Manhattan Jaspers as they headed out West to take on the Arizona Wildcats for what was and will probably be their toughest competition this season.
Arizona, then nationally ranked, had just gotten guard Salim Stoudamire back and was ready and more than prepared to take on the Jaspers. Although Manhattan fought hard they were no match as the Wildcats jumped out to a 20 point lead 10 minutes into the game. Leading 57-29 at halftime the Wildcats never looked back. Although Freshmen CJ Anderson and Arturo Dubois lead Manhattan respectively with 22 and 18 points that was not nearly enough as Manhattan lost 105-75.
Next on the schedule for Manhattan was Wisconsin-Milwaukee where the Jaspers unfortunately fell again. Not sure what happened here, but the Jaspers seemed to have the game under control throughout the whole game. After leading by 8 at halftime and cruising until the last 5 minutes of the game when Milwaukee jumped ahead forcing the Jaspers to scramble. They were down by three with less than a minute left. Junior Jason Wingate was then fouled and able to knot the game at 65 but not able to put it away after missing the second shot. So the game went to overtime where the Jaspers let the game get out of hand and ended up losing 88-78. Peter Mulligan led the Jaspers with 24 points in the defeat. CJ Anderson also had another strong game with 21 points.
Next the team took on and defeated both Wichita and North Dakota State followed by a loss to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Marist. After the loss to Marist, the Jaspers defeated Niagara 78-72 in front of the home crowd. The Jaspers had a strong showing led by Mulligan and Anderson. Mulligan had 32 points and 8 rebounds while Anderson recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 boards. Jason Wingate also chipped in with 11 points. Then on the 15th the team lost a nail biter to Iona 69-67. A tough defeat and blow to their MAAC regular season record making them 2-3 while the Gaels moved to just 1-5 in MAAC play. Manhattan had enough chances to win but just could not sink the winning shot in a series of 3-point attempts that just seem to fall short.
Just recently, the Jaspers captured a nice conference win over St. Peters. All five of the Manhattan starters were able to hit double-figures as the Jaspers posted a 92-82 win. It was a nice performance all around from all the players who were all able to contribute in an impressive win. http://www.gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=1407Peter Mulligan dropped 17 points and six boards, http://www.gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=182http://www.gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=1398Jason Wingate notched a career-high of 16 points, Jeff Xavier also came up with a season-high 12 points, five steals, three rebounds, and three assists, and Arturo Dubois was able to add 11 points as well.
