The new track and field season at Manhattan College kicked off last month and it seems that the Jaspers are off to a great start. With the incredible legacy of the Manhattan men and women's track and field team, it seems that the Jaspers always have what it takes.

The Metropolitan Championships are just around the corner and several Jasper men and women qualified to participate. That is 14 men and women to be exact. Just to name a few, seniors Mike Guidotti, Nick Newman, and Paul Henry all qualified for the Triple Jump for the Metropolitan Championships. Amazingly, this will not be the first time Guidotti and Henry participate in this championship. In 2004, Henry placed seventh while Guidotti finished sixth in the Triple Jump.

Now let us not forget the women. Jennifer Bradley, who is a junior, and Ida-Maria Holmgren, a freshman Jasper, both qualified for Weight Throw in the Met Championships. It was stated that both threw their greatest at this season's Manhattan Invitational, which took place on December 1, 2004, making them qualify for this event.

The talent of these men and women is undeniable. At the Manhattan Invitational junior Marina Liander placed first in the Shot Put. With the IC4A Championships also fast approaching, the Jasper men gave it their all making some on the track and field team qualify to participate in the IC4A as well. Those who qualified in the Weight Throw were freshman Paul Peulich, juniors Anders Constantin, Michael Freeman, Zoran Loncar, and senior Nils Pettersson. With Constantin and Loncar placing third and fourth and Freeman placing second Manhattan hopes to see awesome results at the upcoming championships.

Some newcomers to the 2004-2005 indoor season such as sophomores Tiina Magi and Christano Johnson definitely made an impression. Magi competed for the first time at the Manhattan Invitational and finished first doing wonderfully in the Triple Jump. She also finished second at the Black Knight invitational in the High Jump. As for Johnson, although this was his first indoor meet at the Fordham Invitational that certainly did not have a damper on the High Jump where he finished first. If that is not enough, then it is important to understand that in the history of track at Manhattan College, Johnson is only the third, yes third, to be able to jump over seven feet.

Moving on to some more current updates with the track and field team is the Black Knight Invitational, which took place on January 15. Both men and women Jaspers made a great impression at this meet with the men placing second and the women finishing fourth.

Some important dates to keep in mind are January 29 and January 30, which is when the Metropolitan Championships take place. The IC4A Championships begin on May 12.
