According to national security adviser Mowaffak al Rubaie, the primary goal is to safeguard voters. "The terrorists and the [Abu Musab al-] Zarqawi people and Saddam loyalists are going to try their level best to do a lot of what they call 'spectacular attacks'...The main aim is to delay the election, is to cancel the election, is to derail the political process," he said, "This is not going to happen."

"Over the last 30 days we have pressed the insurgents hard-ruthlessly...In fact, we've conducted over 270 combat operations. And in doing so we've detained over 800 insurgents and captured over 100 weapon caches," said U.S. Brig. Gen. Jeffery Hammond.

"Now, you can imagine that should, obviously, put some sort of dent in the insurgents' resources and his ability to continue to wage this fight," he continued. "It will be the Iraqi security forces actually guarding the polling sites with American forces supporting, but being very active-very active and not passive."

Holocaust Victims Remembered in Poland
According to CNN.com, world leaders, Holocaust survivors, and family members met in Poland to remember those lost in the Holocaust. Viewing a monument in memory of the victims, they celebrated the 60th anniversary of their release from the Auschwitz Nazi camp.

Israeli President Moshe Katsav said, "It seems if you listen hard enough, you can still hear the outcry of horror of the murdered people. When I walk the ground of the concentration camps, I fear that I am walking on the ashes of the victims."

Former prisoner Jan Wojciech Topolewski, who also lost her mother in the camp, said, "I am not here to talk about what happened. My only aim is to light a candle for my mother, whose ashes are who know where in this camp."

"Today I'm remembering my father, gassed here. I'm remembering the atrocious things they did to us here," 80 year old Franchiszek Jozafiak said, "I drank water from a dirty pool and, to punish me, an SS man jumped on my arm and broke it and jumped on my chest and broke two ribs."
