The De La Salle Medal was established in 1951 in honor of John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The De La Salle Medal honors an executive or a company displaying corporate leadership and service to society, and it has been conferred annually by the board of trustees since 1977. Past recipients are former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani '65, Con Edison chairman and chief executive Eugene R. Mc Grath '63, American International Group CEO Maurice Greenberg, Keyspan CEO and chairman Robert Catell, and the IBM Corporation. Computer Associates International received the award last year.

About 600 people attended this year's dinner- priced at $750-per-plate- and the proceeds support many of Manhattan's needs. The funds are applied to academic and co-curricular programs, scholarship assistance, facilities and equipment upgrades, and library resources.

The De La Salle Medal Dinner honors individuals, corporations, and businesses that support Manhattan College. The dinner shows the important roles graduates play in business and government, as well as alumni involvement in New York City's economic structure.
