On January 19, 2005, Manhattan College awarded the De La Salle medal to Seymour "Sy" Sternberg, chairman and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Company, at an annual fund-raiser. The black-tie dinner, held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, is a major corporate event and Manhattan's top fund-raiser.

The night began with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and was followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 and a formal program at 8:45. Jim Ryan '60, host of Good Day New York on Fox Channel 5, was the Master of Ceremonies. Peter Musumeci '72, the Dinner Chairman and Executive Vice President of Commerce Bank, spoke about the importance of his Manhattan College education. He said he rekindled his relationship with the school after losing contact for many years and described how meaningful it was. Brother Thomas Scanlan introduced Sternberg after Musumeci's address. He spoke about the similarities between Manhattan College and New York Life, and how both are institutions committed to educating young people.

In his acceptance speech, Sternberg, the son of immigrants, described growing up in Brooklyn and attending Manhattan College. He said going to an affordable school in New York City enabled him to succeed. He spoke of the college's contribution to New York Life and recognized over fifty employees and vice presidents who are Manhattan graduates. One of the evening's highlights was a six minute video tribute to Manhattan College prepared by New York Life.

Brother Scanlan, Vice President for Advancement James Heisey, and the Board of Trustees select one honoree annually. Sternberg was chosen because he is a leader in the insurance business and is an individual who supports education and encourages volunteer work at New York Life. He is devoted to keeping the city's educational opportunities available to young people. Sternberg became Chairman of the Board and CEO of New York Life in 1997. President Clinton appointed him to serve as one of three United States representatives to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Business Advisory Council. He remained in this position until 2002. Sternberg currently serves on the boards of the U.S. China Business Council, Express Scripts, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Partnership for New York City, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New York City. He is a member of the board of governors of the United Way of Tri-State and the board of trustees of Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York.
