Mets Promising 2005

Issue date: 2/2/05 Section: Sports
Well here is something for all you Mets fans out there. They had an off-season that was not "off" by any stretch of the imagination. The New York Mets and their front office have not had a day off since the post season ended and they started trying to hook some of the year's hottest free agents over the winter break.

This off-season did not exactly start like any of the others in recent history. There is usually plenty of talk involving the Mets, but they never actually get the player they want. The players usually either end up going to a lousy high bidding team or to the Yankees. All of that has changed, at least for the moment, as it happens this year they were actually able to sign some quality players. Go figure.

The Mets managed to land this year's two biggest free agents and have recently added a great first baseman to their roster. It does not end there for they are still perusing further acquisitions that will hopefully bring the team back into playoff contention and possibly even back to the World Series where, five years ago, they lost to the other New York team, the Yankees. Now that the Mets have equipped themselves with a top-notch pitcher in Pedro Martinez and signed last year's hottest hitter Carlos Beltran, they look like a whole new ball club.

The Mets have a team that can actually win ball games. After bloopers from the past few seasons and questionable signings that have not exactly produced as expected, the Mets look like a quality contender. Now the Mets fans will actually have something else to attract them out to Shea Stadium besides an over the hump catcher, Mike Piazza, and the reliable closer of theirs Johnny Franco. Mets games will once again be an exiting event this year.

Yes it may have cost them $172 Million dollars, but that is scrap money compared to what they will pull in this year with growing attendance and other support. With the different television deals and possible new stadium the Mets are looking to expand. Omar Minaya, Mets president is building the team to become winners. He has done a fantastic job so far this season and is still on the verge of a couple of other major acquisitions.
