On Sunday, February 27, 2005, the 77th Annual Academy Awards will take place. As always, the most talked about and important award is for Best Picture. The nominations for this category are The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby, Ray, and Sideways.
The Aviator is a biopic about Howard Hughes-a director and aviator's career from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, co-starring Cate Blanchett and directed by Martin Scorsese, this film has received great reviews since its release on December 17, of last year.
Finding Neverland is the story of J. M. Barrie author of Peter Pan, and his creation for the famous children's tale. His inspiration for the film comes from his relationship with a neighborhood family. Starring Johnny Depp and co-starring Kate Winslet, this is a movie that has won rave reviews from reviews and fans alike.
Million Dollar Baby stars Clint Eastwood as a boxer turned trainer who helps Maggie (Hillary Swank) become established as a boxer. Clint Eastwood, aside from acting, also directed this film. Many people have steered clear from this movie due to the fact that many are not interested in boxing, however, the film centers more on the determination of Maggie and not completely on the boxing aspects. Those who have seen the movie have only good things to say.
Similarly, most people heard good reviews about Ray even before its release into theaters. Starring Jamie Foxx and directed by Taylor Hackford, Ray Charles even assisted in the making of the movie so that it would be as accurate as possible.
Sideways, starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church, is the story of two friends, one of which is getting married. They take a trip through the California wine country. The movie has not been as publicized as the others, and still is a good choice for Best Picture.
The nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role are Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland, Clint Eastwood in Million Dollar Baby, Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator, Jamie Foxx in Ray, and Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda. Hotel Rwanda is a true tale about Paul Resesabagina, the manager of a hotel who hid over a thousand Tutsis refugees during their fight against the Hutu Militia in Rwanda. In 1994, The Hutu Militia slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people from Rwanda.
