On Wednesday February 2, the senior class officers presented "109 Nights." This event was set up to help anxious seniors to fight off the urge to slow down academically as their time here at Manhattan College comes to an end.

According to senior class President Mike Scollins the event was primarily set up because, "there were complaints that senior class officers were only planning events that revolved around alcohol." Although this event was alcohol free, it was also poorly attended and ill received by the members of the senior class.

The small crowd that attended was treated with pizza and informative and useful information about life after graduation from students from last year's senior class. Ex- student government President, Chris Nooney, talked about how he felt his last semester at Manhattan, and his position and experience at his present job. Nooney spoke about how many of his classmates, including himself, were not lined up for a job before they graduated from Manhattan. However, he pointed out that by July and August most of his friends had received jobs.

Other Alumni present were Kelly Deming, and John Altieri. Kelly, who received her degree in Finance and Economics, now works at Morgan Stanley Financial Firm. Deming, who was lucky to receive her job right out of college, also relayed to the seniors that although the transition is tough, "it will all work out in the end." John Altieri, who majored in Civil Engineering, also conveyed to the seniors that although he is still learning at his job, in September he really felt he was doing something meaningful and he felt liked he belonged at his job.

All three Alumni, along with Kina Ventura, stressed the importance of Alumni contacts. While they all agreed that going to career services was a good start for your job search, it could not be the be all and end all of your search for a job. Also, when you are interviewing for a company, make sure you know facts about that company and reasons how you can help improve their work.

The main message of this speech was to encourage seniors to keep with their schoolwork and not become to stressed over what could possibly happen after graduation. If they take moving forward, into the real world, one step at a time everything will work out for them in the end. While the turnout was low for this alcohol free event, it was probably one of the most helpful and encouraging events for the seniors this year.
