Taking Risks: Some Students from far and Abroad at Manhattan College

Brian O’Connor

Issue date: 2/9/05 Section: Features
Though many students here at Manhattan tend to call nearby states home, there are varied students who are not afforded the luxury of a commuter train or car to take them home. These students are the ones who always surprise those who ask that ubiquitous college question of "So, where are you from?" Though they may be outnumbered in many ways, students from places as far as California and Hawaii make Manhattan a more interesting place to live and work.

Scott Burton, a freshman in the School of Arts, is a resident of La Jolla, California. Ranked at about 300 for professional golfers nationwide, Scott came to Manhattan College to continue playing his sport. Since Manhattan has Division 1 athletics, the choice for Scott became obvious. When he signed in during orientation, he remembers an Irish groundskeeper witnessing his large golf club case and saying, "Aye, that's either one of the biggest kegs I've ever seen, or a wee freshman didn't survive the trip." For Scott, Manhattan College provided him with an opportunity to see what life is like on the East Coast, something that he often refers to as being very different than how his home is.

Kristen Nypert is another west-coast import. After spending time in Orange County, CA, Kristen decided to come to New York City.

"I found out about Manhattan College through my college counselor. When he was aware that I was looking into going to the east coast for school, he put together a list of schools he was familiar with and felt I might be interested in," says Nypert.

As Kristen decided on coming to New York City for school, she had a few options at her disposal when it came to the actual school she wanted to attend. Agreeing with the sentiments of many fellow Jaspers, Kristen liked the proximity Manhattan College has to the actual island of Manhattan.

"I liked the location and thought the school was pretty and quaint. The close proximity to the subway, and school activities in the city were also big selling points."
