Earlier this month, Junior Tom McCarthy was fired from being a Resident Advisor for having a party in his room on the 11th floor of Horan Hall.
Resident Director Mariangela Petrone refused to comment on the situation, as did the Dean of Resident Life, John Mark, who declined to comment at this time because "the situation [needs] further investigation."
According to Tom McCarthy, "The incident itself involved underage drinking in the room of an RA and it was a case of myself being in the wrong place at the wrong time"
"It was the 21st birthday of my suitemate and my suitemates had all planned on going out, and my suite served as a meeting place for everyone."
"I wasn't supposed to be around but stopped by for a half hour, 45 minutes or so, in which time Mariangela and two RAs stopped by and broke up the party."
11th floor resident and freshman, Zach Winslow said, "Tom's a great guy, everyone was jealous of our RA's Sarah and Tom because they enforced the rules but they weren't out to get you. They would be willing to do anything- fix any problem you'd have, even if it meant going out of their way."
Colin Riley, also another freshman and 11th floor resident said, "I think Tom realized that we were adults in college and we should be treated as such." He then added, "I think it's kind of ridiculous that Tom has to leave. He's been such an outstanding RA over the course of last semester and this semester that one mistake should not have had such large implications."
Sophomore Doug Pakiela added, "Our resident RA got fired for acting like a resident."
When asked about his punishment of being suspended, Tom McCarthy added, "As a result, the senior staff of Horan felt it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the staff or the residents to keep me on [as an RA] because of [this situation]."
"Ideally I should have not allowed my room to turn into a party/meeting place for people that were planning on going out drinking."
