On the heels of a successful 2004 season, the men's lacrosse team looks to build upon their past success with new faces, and Metropolitan Atlantic Athletic Conference standings. Going 8 out 15 last season, the team looks to add upon the success they had last season, and work towards the MAAC championship.
On Feb. 4th, Manhattan College was selected by MAAC coaches to finish fourth in the conference's preseason poll. Receiving 63 points, the Jaspers were a point below Mount Saint Mary College, and four points behind Marist and Providence Colleges, who were tied for first place in the poll. Last year, Manhattan tarnished Marists perfect record in postseason play, defeating them 10 to 7 before being beat by Providence College in the championship game.
Also named in the Preseason All-MAAC team, Senior attack Justin Otto was mentioned during the voting. His second year on the All-MAAC team, Otto led Manhattan in goals scored and points earned. His record earned him second place in the MAAC record for points, and tied for first place in the number of goals scored. Accompanied by seven other high scoring seniors, the Jaspers plan to use their high standings to propel them to the championship game once again this season.
Joining the team's seniors are some fresh faces: Jack O'Malley, Brian Wynne, Kevin Dorsey, Mike Schulke, Chris Holub, Mike Wilcox, Ben Chamish, Jonathan Chambers, Corey Dolik, Justin Venditt, and Shawn Gorinson.
O'Malley hails from Bridgeport, CT, and the Notre Dame Academy. His team earned the 2004 First Team All State, First Team All Conference, and earned personally the Connecticut Post's All Star award. Brian Wynne, hailing from East Islip, NY, was named as an All Team player in 2004, and also earned Second Team honors in Football. Talented both on and off the field, Wynne also made honor roll in Islip High School. Kevin Dorsey, from Oswego, NY, is the former captain of his Oswego High School Lacrosse team, and was also named Second Team All Star. Similarly to Wynne, Dorsey was a scholar athlete for all four years of high school. Mike Shulke, from Schnectady, NY, was named team MVP, 2004 All County, All Division, and won the Coach's Award as a senior. A member of Kings Park High School's Einstein Club, Shulke is another scholar athlete on the team this season. Kansas native Chris Holub led his high school team to an impressive 7-4 record last year, scoring 31 goals and 14 assists. Mike Wilcox, a native of Saint Louis, Missouri, led his team as captain to All-Conference and All-State awards. An Academic All-American, Wilcox was featured in the National High School Senior Showcase All-Star Game, and was promptly added to the team here at Manhattan. Ben Chamish, from Wilmington, DE, was given Honorable Mention All-Conference defenseman both his sophomore and senior years. Chamish was also picked for the First-Team All-Conference on defense in his junior year. Connecticut native Jonathan Chambers was his team's co-captain during his junior and senior years. He was also named team MVP as a senior, and Outstanding Offensive Player as a junior. Corey Dolik, from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, was named First-Team All-State during his junior and senior years, and was a defensive MVP and Top Star as a junior. Justin Venditti, a freshman from Fayetteville, NY, was picked First-Team All-League as a senior, and Second-Team All-League as a junior. Rounding out the batch of freshman on the team this year, Shawn Gorinson hails from Ossining, NY, and was named All-Section as a senior, received honorable mention All-Section as a junior.
With talented upperclassmen, and promising freshmen, the Manhattan College Men's Lacrosse team shows promise. Coupled with a high ranking in the MAAC, the team anticipates the start of their season with their game against the University of Virginia on the 26th.
