The Manhattan College Men's tennis team has been performing well lately. They have started their spring season with much success and a new recruit. "We have a great new player from Hungary, Peter Czhly who will be a strong addition to us doing well this season," said senior/co-captain, Erez Cohen. Overall the team has very high expectations about the rest of the season and the NCAA Tournament.
The team is doing its best to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. They know that in order to get past the first round of the NCAA takes a lot of commitment. Cohen stated "The goal for us this season is not just to go to the NCAA, which is very likely, but also to win a round. Most likely we will have a top eight seed because of our conference and that will definitely be a tough endeavor to overcome."
On Jan. 21 the Jaspers swept Buffalo University at a score of 7-0 as they improved their record to 2-0. In the first doubles competition, Manhattan's sophomore Zoltan Bus and freshman Filip Szymik beat Nick Zieziula and Albert Avant of Buffalo with a score of 8-5. In the second double competition, senior Alan Cohen and freshman Peter Czink won at a score of 8-1. In the third doubles competition sophomores Diego Alvarado and David Alvarado won the match at a score of 8-4.
In the competition against Buffalo Diego Alvarado was playing in the number one spot where he defeated Zieziula in two sets, 7-6 and 7-6. Playing in the number two spot, Zoltan Bus beat Mike Rockman 6-2, 6-4. And in the match of the number three spot, Peter Czink beat Josh Liederman 6-1, 6-4. Alon Cohen, David Alvarado, and Filip Szymik helped Manhattan sweep Buffalo in their singles matches.
The tennis team competed at the Columbia Winter Classic held at Columbia University's Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Zoltan Bus performed very well being the top finisher making it to the quarterfinal "A" round. However, he lost to St. John's University's David Nylen 6-4, 6-1. Zoltan Bus beat Jimmy Moore of Columbia to get to the quarter finals. The score was 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Diego Alvarado and senior Alon Cohen were the other two Jaspers to compete in the "A" flight. Cohen suffered a defeat in the first round to Louis Demarteaux of St. John's.
David Alvarado and Filip Szymik were playing in the "B" Flight. Alvarado defeated Frank Algier of Marist by a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the 16th round. However he lost Johnny Lu of Yale in three sets by a score of 6-0, 4-6, and 6-1 in the quarter finals. Szymik lost in the first round to St. John's University's Boris Chiporuka. The score was 6-4, 6-3. Szymick fell to Frederic Rolan of Marist in two sets. The score was 7-6, 6-3. The disappointment for Manhattan continued as Bus and Szymik were defeated in doubles to Santucci and Rolan of Marist by a score of 8-4 in the first round.
The team is determined to win and place Manhattan on top. "I expect many great things to come out of the tennis team this semester and I think that if we maintain the same level of focus, intensity and determination then we will have a great season for sure. I think it could even be the greatest season in Manhattan tennis history," said Cohen.
