Millions of people have been affected by cancer in some way or another. It is almost impossible to find a member of the Manhattan College community who does not know someone who has cancer or is in remission from cancer. In order to support those we know with this disease, Manhattan College is sponsoring The Relay for Life for the second year in a row.
Senior, Government/Urban Affairs major, Justin Carlucci, is in charge of planning this monumental event and is very excited about its outcome. According to Carlucci, who also planned the event last year, "This year's relay is going to be a lot bigger. We have a lot of fun stuff planned, so everyone should have a good time."
The American Cancer Society sponsors this overnight event, which will be held on Saturday April 2 at 5 P.M. and will continue through to Sunday morning. According to its flyers, "Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated."
While the primary objective for the event is to raise money for The American Cancer Society, the event will be filled with many opportunities for the participants to have a good time.
Like last year's event, the Draddy gym will be filled with live music for a portion of the evening. However, the success of last year's relay has increased the number of bands from three to ten. In addition to live music, there will be other activities to participate in, to ensure that everybody has a good time.
According to Carlucci, "There are going to be raffles, sports tournaments, kickboxing, pilates, and yoga classes, and massage tables. Also, both the Jasper Dancers and Steppers will perform to entertain the crowd. In addition to all this there will also be a Texas Hold 'Em tournament, which had a large crowd last year making the tournament last most of the night. There will also be a ton of food and drinks."
While other clubs here sponsors the food at the college, this year's relay coordinators were fortunate enough to get Red Bull energy drink to be a sponsor. "Besides providing all the drinks for the event, Red Bull is also hosting a Halo 2 tournament where they will be giving out games and consoles. We are very lucky to have them as a sponsor; they are so corporative and willing to help," said Carlucci.
