And the Razzie Goes To...

Kara Agostino

Issue date: 3/23/05 Section: Arts & Entertainment
It is every actor's dream to sit in a theatre full of the most talented thespians of our time and win the most desired award for his/her profession-the Oscar. The Oscar recognizes the talent of the elite in the acting world and gives them credit where credit is due. However, on the eve of the Oscars a less distinguished award is also announced-the Raspberry. The Raspberry is the complete opposite, recalling and awarding the worst "accomplishments" of the year past. For every Million Dollar Baby or The Aviator, there will always be the annual Van Helsing and Alien vs. Predator disasters. The "Razzies", as they are often called, take the time to recognize the lack of originality and dull cinematic performances.

The Razzies this year were somewhat different than in the past, giving multiple "awards" for the documentary Fahrenheit 9/11. President Bush was awarded the Razzie for the worst actor of the year. Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice and President Bush were also named the year's worst screen couple while Donald Rumsfeld, Defense Secretary, won the Razzie for worst supporting actor.

It seems that many actors after winning an Oscar, have a difficult time choosing parts of the same caliber. Just as Ben Affleck in Gigli, Halle Berry made the poor decision star as Catwoman. Catwoman tied with Fahrenheit 9/11, winning four Raspberries each. Catwoman was awarded worst picture, worst directing, worst screenplay, and worst performance by an actress.

This year was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Raspberries and thus, unique awards were distributed. The worst musical of the past 25 years was won by From Justin to Kelly. The worst comedy of the past two and a half decades was won by none other than Gigli. John Travolta's Battlefield Earth took home the Razzie for worst drama. It is safe to say that there are no surprises here.

Worst actor of all time? Unfortunately no such award was presented; however, there was an award for worst Razzie loser in the last 25 years. Naturally, this was awarded to the Governator, Arnold Schwarzeneggar. He has been nominated eight times throughout this 25 year period and has escaped winning the Raspberry by the skin of his teeth.
