There is a musical on Broadway that is breaking all conventional rules for a show. This show, Avenue Q, combines puppets and humans throughout the performance. Some of these puppets resemble Sesame Street characters that we all grew up watching, but these characters are more adult age appropriate.
?Avenue Q begins with a puppet, Princeton, looking for a place to live in?New York City and realizing his B.A. in English is useless. He stumbles upon an apartment complex, in some outer borough, with Gary Coleman as the superintendent; sadly the real Gary Coleman does not play the role. Princeton has all sorts of neighbors: Brian an unemployed comedian, Christmas wants to open a school for Monsters (a Monsterssori School), Rod a closeted gay puppet investment banker, Nicky who knows Rod is gay and it trying to get him to admit it, Trekkie Monster who the puppets creator Rick Lyon, says is the love child of the Grinch and Chewbacca (newyorkmetro.com), and Lucy T, the typical tramp that tries to ruin things between Kate Monster and Princeton.

You see the puppeteers throughout the show yet you keep your attention to the small puppet attached to their arm. This shows follows these people around their daily routines as they search for what to do with their lives since they have graduated college, and how to get a job they might enjoy. You come across the Bad Idea Bears in the middle of the show. They would be considered the bad side of someone's?conscience times two that cause trouble all around. These bears resemble Care Bears who took a wrong turn on their way to Care Bear land. They, in my opinion, are the funniest characters in the show.
?If you have ever heard of Avenue Q then you must have heard of the choice of songs the producers use. The songs are no less than hysterical. To give you an idea of the context of some of the songs titles are The Internet is for Porn, Everybody's A Little Bit Racist, I Wish I Could Go Back to College, and If You Were Gay. These may seem like racy titles, so be prepared for the possibility that your heritage will be attacked in this unique musical.
?I personally would recommend this show to anyone, especially people in college and recent graduates. Where else could you get a gay Republican puppet and full frontal nude puppet sex? Just be sure to attend this with an open mind, and be ready to burst out laughing. This is the type of musical that many different people can attend, and actually enjoy it. It is not the typical boring, stuffy type of show where you end falling asleep half way through the first act; instead you stay focused on the show and realize your major, like Princeton, may be?may be useless. If this is show sounds like it would be your cup of tea, Student Activities will be selling tickets for April 16 at 2:00pm.
